Joseph was believed to be very old. During those times it was not uncommon for a young girl to mary an old man, so that the girl may remain pure for God yet still be taken care of.
This makes more sense as Mary questioned Gabriel after he told her she was going to have a baby. She wanted to know how. If she was going to raise of family with Joseph, she would not have asked that question.

He was probably in his teens, because the society and culture back then was very, very harsh towards unmarried people. Sometimes they were killed.
