It is important to recognize that IBS is a label and not a diagnosis. It is routinely given to patients (as if it is a valid diagnosis) when the doc cannot find the cause of the patient's bowel symptoms.
The BEST way to treat 'IBS' is to find and fix the cause of the problems. Causes of IBS-like symptoms include:
1) Celiac Disease (gluten sensitive enteropathy)
2) Intestinal Dysbiosis (imbalance and overgrowth of pathogenic organisms living in the gut)
3) Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
4) Food allergies/intolerances
5) Leaky gut syndrome (Intestinal Hyperpermeability)
6) Heavy metal toxicties (e.g. mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, etc.)
7) Neurological imbalances, including nerve 'impingement' in the spine.
These are common conditions, and any doctor that has not ruled out ALL of them before giving you the meaningless 'IBS' label is not serving you well.
I would like to suggest an excellent book that discusses these issues and explains appropriate treatment for them. It is written by Sherry Rogers, M.D. and is called "No More Heartburn". Even though the title sounds limited to heartburn, the book thoroughly discusses the cause and treatment of gut problems that get labeld as 'IBS'. The book is available at Amazon.com.
Best wishes and good luck.

There is a phamacy medicine called "donna tab "but like all tablets you need to have water with you and they take a little time to work a herbal medicine you can use if "Mag phos"this you place under your tongue or chew them these are more convenient as you don't need water and can take them while driving or out easily but donot use them continuesly as I have been told using too many is not good for your health also you can buy charcoal tablets another herbal medicine which works the same as donnatab again you need water with them .I keep all 3 on hand and rotate there use so as my body does not get too used of them .You can take paracetamol with codiene which helps with the irratible bowel as well as the pain but too much paracetamol is bad for the kidneys and your body can get hooked on the codiene which is not good .
