Yes, a Remington Model 700 is an excellent firearm. They are built solidly and are one of the most accurate rifles made, without getting into custom designs. For the money, they don't even have a close competitor. Spend some money for a quality optic and the Model 700 will make one of the best rigs out there. You can pay more and get better, but for an out-of-the-box shooter, they can't be beat.

If anyone says no they are just being brand loyal to the rifles they own. The Remington 700 action has been used as the platform for the most custom rifles than any other action. I personally like my Savages (just because they are less expensive and shoot better than I can hold in field conditions), but I can tell you without a doubt that the 700 is not a good firearm, it is better than good.

When I buy a rifle I assume it's going to need work to turn it into a shooter. One of my 700's was a real project but eventually turned into one of my favorites. Two were tackdrivers straight out of the box, and another only needed a little stock work. That puts the 700 in my favorites list. If I'm hunting deer or hogs with a bolt gun, chances are 95% that I'm carrying a 700.

The Remington 700 series of bolt-action rifles is one of the all-time classic designs. Why? Because it is of rock-solid design and the barrel is fitted into the receiver the classic way. It's smaller parts are of good durability. Also, the 700 comes in so many ways as to be affordable to the masses without sacrificing quality. One could say that the model 700 is the "Sears Craftsman" of bolt-action rifles. Although not part of your question, the same can be said of the Remington 870 pump shotgun. You can buy nicer rifles and shotguns, but the prices are so much higher as not to make much sense, unless you have a particular taste that must be adhered to.

yes, i have 2 of them,a .270 and a .222. i also had a .243, but it was stolen. they are good, hunting rifles. not too expensive. i recommend them.

a note**

they made some of them in the late 80's or early 90's that had a design flaw in the bolt. avoid any made during these years. the flaw was a serious problem. i had one of the problem guns. i complained to dealer, it was replaced with a new rifle. the problem was called "hang-fire" (i think that is what it was called). what mine did was, about every 15th- or 20th shot, pull trigger, click, no fire, then after about 1-2 seconds BOOM! it would go off.

edit**

here is a link about the problem. this problem is similar to the problem that i had. there are several other sites that discuss this too.

http://hunting.about.com/od/guns/a/aacbsnewsrem700_2.htm

when i first had a delayed firing problem, i told the dealer, he blamed the ammunition. i threw away that ammo and bought new. it happened 3 more times over about a 3 year span using different ammo each time. i got rid of the gun after that.

whoever gave thumbs down to my post and the other post above that described a problem is not doing you any favor.

buy one new, or one not more than 10 years old. you will love it.

Yes I have owned tow of them and one I have is a 308 bull barrel, I used it in the Marine Corp as my main sniper rifle.
#08 caliber is a good all around round, and I've made 700 yard shots with no problem.
Good luck and it's a great weapon.
C.Z is also A NICE CHOICE.

Yes it's a very good gun, however some made back in previous decades had a problem where they would fire when the bolt was taken off safety. If you are interested in owning an older gun, then look into the problem I described.
