Malbec has, in recent years, become the flagship grape of Argentina. It certainly produces a versatile, complex red wine to pair with a variety of foods.

I'm always on the lookout for inexpensive wines that taste like they ought to cost much more. Two of my favourite Malbecs are:

-Catena Malbec. This usually costs $20-25 a bottle. It used to be a single vineyard bottling, but I think in 2003 it became a multi-vineyard blend and is now even more consistent in quality for its price.
-Dona Paula Lujan de Cuyo Malbec. Even cheaper and just as good. Usually retails between $15-20. The 2004 was a best value wine in Wine Spectator magazine, scoring 89 points out of 100. My 1999's are still drinking well now.
