I try talking with him about certain things and he has his theory on everthing and dismisses all that I am trying to convey to him. The other night he gave a cop a bunch of lip and almost got himself arrested. I know 17 is a tough age, but I'm afraid this attitude will get him into some major trouble or he will start losing friends. What can we do to change the attitude?

He's obviously smarter than you. He already knows how to handle cops!! Let his mouth get him into trouble. This doesn't require any action from you.

Just remember to do the best you can, sometimes tough love is the best. Next time he gets lippy with the law, pull the officer aside and ask him to take him for a ride, and you'll pick him up in the morning. And yes sometimes a good *** kickin from someone is what it takes to show him its not all cake and ice cream out there.

It's a little late to begin changing his attittude. Discipline starts at the age the inappropriate behavior begins. He will soon be on his own and he will have to be taken down a few times to learn that there's a better way than his.

Take everything away from him.. TV, Computer, Music, Allowence, everything, Make him get a job..And do everything on his own. I was on my own and paying my own bills and rent at 17yrs old maybe this lippy lil punk needs to feel whats it like not to be looked after by mommy and daddy.

give him some good old tough love!

Maybe if he does get into some serious trouble he will learn from his mistakes. Explain to him that you are getting on to him because you love him...and that if you didn't love him you wouldn't care that he was getting into trouble or what was going in his life.

good luck

Can't do much at 17, his brain is already fixed and he'll have to suffer the consequences and learn for himself.
