I had a smiliar experience! At the time our cat was about 13 years old and very sweet unless teased for long periods of time or if held on its back, like a baby.
The time it happened to me was when there was a cat fight outside of my window and I was looking out with my cat. I didn't see anything but it really irked my cat! He suddenly lashed out and scratched me straight down the middle of my face! (It was no picnic going to school the next day!)
He did it because he was scared and confused. Since you say this happened at night, your daughter's cat could have been spooked by something and attacked your daughter out of fear rather than hostility.
I hope you don't think any less of your little kitty because of this. Odds are, your cat doesn't really remember the experience! The cat might even be wanting to snuggle up a little now!
I don't think you can prevent another occurance like this unless you get your cat declawed (which hurts your kitty and leaves them totally defensless if it gets lost outside).
I can tell you that my cat hasn't scratched my face again since that night of the cat fight outside my window! So, hopefully, its just a one-time-thing. If it does happen again, I suggest that your daugter try to make your cat more comfortable for the night (closing windows and blinds and leaving the bedroom door open for it can wonder around).
Good luck to your daughter and the kitty!

The most probable reason would be that the cat was suddenly scared by something, probably your daughter moving around in her sleep or if she was walking around. The cat may have been going for her eyes, because your some light must have been reflecting off her eyes, so the cat saw the glare, and yeah.

I basically revealed about this in yet another question about aloof canines. This chihuahua is displaying submission: the tongue licking the nostril, the cowering "hunched" posture. To a canines, this suggests, ok, you win, leave me on my own and bypass eat the foodstuff / take the valuable toy / regardless of - do exactly not damage me. To a cat, this suggests, "enable's goorm!" Now, there are different perspectives on canines grooming. My view is that canines typically self groom. Others will say that dominant canines is groomed through the decrease score canines (depending on the primate sort). And ultimately there are talked about grooming behaviors linked with a wound, or mating rituals. None of those would note right here, when you consider that this canines is clearly being submissive, isn't bleeding, and those animals at the instantaneous are not frisking round in any style of mating ritual. My take is that the Chihuahua looks uncomfortable for the time of the video. i does not say he became "taking section in" the lick down in any respect. and ultimately adequate became adequate - he determined no rape!

This happened to my friend, She was attacked in the face while sleeping. She said she had heard other cats earlier in the evening outside, which maybe triggered her cats to do this. She didn't sleep with her cat for a year but she is finally allowed back in the bed. The cat only did it once.

Is she a young cat? They sometimes do this as a playful thing. Mine when it was younger would attack my foot if I moved it in the night. I suppose it isn't funny or cute if it happens to a child. Try keeping your daughters door closed at night.

It's possible that she rolled onto the cat and it was acting in self-defense. This happened to my mother a long time ago and the cat scratched one of her eyes so bad she thought she was going to lose it. I suggest not letting the cat sleep with her anymore.

Your daughter was probably moving. Is the cat up to date on it's shots ? If not it may have rabies or some other disease but otherwise cats are known to attack owners.

Was she moving? Maybe the cat was being playful...mine do that sometime. Attack out of nowhere where you think they're being malicious, but in actuallity, they're just playing.

My cat did this once, I was petting him and he was cuddling on my belly, when he totally attacked my arm like it was a big rat and scratched my arm all up. He was a little psyhotic sometimes.
