in windows I like to have my task bar run vertical on the right hand side of the screen, can I do this with the dock in Mac OS X?

Right click on the dock near the separator and go to dock preferences, or use the apple menu to go to dock preferences, or go to system preferences and go to dock.

Also, you can use a cool free download called TinkerTool to put the dock on the top of your screen... It also lets you use "devmode" for the widgets so you can leave them on the desktop! That's the reason I first downloaded TinkerTool. Yes, I know, I can use the command: defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES But tinkertool has an easy interface for changing a few other things...

Or, there's a little line that separates the Trash from the rest of the dock.... if you hold down the Shift key and click on that line, you can drag the dock to the bottom or either side of the screen. You can also click on this line and drag it up and down to resize the dock.

Yes. Go to the Apple menu (top left) -> Dock -> Position on Right

Oh i just noticed that! Yeah, its part of the dock. It's supposed to be "PRETTY"! You can position your dock the sides and you'll have a different look and no grey bar.

yes you can.. the guy above me has it all... however you can also change its size and make it magnify when you reach down by going to the same place...
