i think most things work out better as friends and that is from experience. I was good friends with a guy when I was in high school and we continued to be good friends after and about a year and a half ago we got married. So we took the chance of being more than friends and look where we are now. Just agree before hand that if things don't work out that you want to continue being friends as if nothing had happened. that way you prevent being weird around each other after if things don't work out

If you known this guy for years and you trust him then you should be all right. Just let him know that you don't want your heart broken in the same way. But if he does it might hurt the relationship and he or you might not see the other as a friend but an enemy.
