Hi there...a cat has 230 - 250 (average 244) depending on the breed of cat--40 more than humans. Cats have 30 vertebrae--15 more than humans have.

230-250 is a good range as reported by several here. The variation is based on the number of toes and the length of the tail. Most cats have five toes on the front paws and four on the back. Polydactyls are cats that have more than the normal number of toes on their feet. More toes mean more bones! Also, some cats are born without tails, with naturally bobbed tails or with extra long tails. These tails also cause the number of bones to vary.

As you can see, there is no one right number. Good question!
