I don't really know how I can apply it in my everyday life but I'm thinking of adding it somewhere. I already say sarcastic things like "That's why God invented the frying pan" and things like that when the situation calls for it.

I was just wondering if I should add things like "God-damnit" and "Jesus Christ" or would that be considered offensive?

Although I have heard Christians say these things....

I have yet to be told what most people who say this think God's name is. It certainly isn't "God" or "Lord". My name is not "human", so saying "human-dammit" would not refer to me at all.

Everyone has a certain set of standards they follow and feel comfortable with. You also have those who never practice what they preach. To most christians , those words are offensive, but to what degree depends on the person. Words are very strong, much stronger than most of us realize. Words have a certain power about them and even a so called "non curse word" can hurt just the same as a curse word can. I would much rather be hit and get it over with then be called a slut, whore, liar or cheat and feel that pain the rest of my life. Atheist or believer, just choose your words wisely when around others and all will be fine. I am sure you are an intellectual person and can have respect for others who do believe and feel hurt at those words. Now the rest is up to you dear and how you will choose to effect others.

i'm an atheist, and that i'm somewhat not that indignant with information from the "less than God" component to the pledge. and also you're precise: You *shouldn't* be prevented from saying it, basically as we should not be *compelled* to assert it, ought to our thoughts on the problem be properly good. yet posting the ten Commandments in a courthouse is slightly too a lot. The institution Clause of the U. S. structure reads: "Congress shall make no regulation respecting an institution of religion...or prohibiting the loose workout thereof." To submit this variety of blatantly Christian record of precepts and injunctions in an section that's nominally unaware of non secular persuasion basically isn't cool. I agree that, frequently, the ten Commandments somewhat are not a foul position to initiate once you're seeking to steer an ethical existence. obviously, "Thou shalt don't have the different gods earlier me" is type of superfluous in that regard; and, all issues considered, it is probable the component to the ten Commandments that i might want to have the most important problem with if I pronounced it in a courtroom of regulation. "Wow...those adult males are gonna be out to get me! i don't believe of their God!" it is basically useless.

if you are an atheist why evoke Gods name at all?

is there something in you deep inside telling you there really is more than this little blue ball hanging in the black void of space and that there is more than nothingness for you after your spirit leaves the confines of your physical body?

when you speed along the highway is it ok? or do you slow down every time you suspect a policeman is near by? why do you do that? is it because you know your breaking the law and run the risk of being punished? Gods laws are not much different.

listen to the quiet still voice inside your spirit knows the truth.
I pray mercy and an open mind for you, be well friend.

If you don't believe in God, why do you care whether it is ok to commit blasphemy? The truth is that everyone knows, deep down in their genetic code, that there is a God. Mens' desire to ignore God and do what is right in their own eyes has been present ever since the beginning. I hope, before it is too late for you, that you will acknowledge your need for God; that you will seek his forgiveness for your sinfulness and that you will be restored to a proper relationship with God. It's not too late for you, despite your attitude.

If you are only taking it as a "Canadian" or "American" thing to say...like Christmas. It has become a Western tradition, not just a Christian tradition anymore. Being Wiccan, I personally don't use Jesus's name in vain simply for the fact I don't believe in him...it seems ridiculous for me to use it and it is offensive to others. You could use it in poetry...O God etc etc would be a use of apostrophe lol
I would lean towards you not using his name in vain.

I don't know exactly how to spell the confused laughing expression on my face, but really, we shouldn't. For the sake of people who follow any particular religion (hard habbit for me to break) Assuming there is a GOD though, I am sure he knows what you mean.

If you're an atheist, therefore not believing in the existence of God (any god), why would you have this question? You don't believe in His existence, therefore you cannot offend Him because, He doesn't exist... for you, remember? What kind of question was that?! I understand having no religion, but I don't understand having no logic.
