I think people cheat for lots of reasons, the main one being that they are selfish. For that moment, they turn off every other part of their thinking but the "me" part. They care not for the loved one, family etc. It is all about the ME. What leads them to that point? Lust, low self esteem, loneliness, boredom... I am sure the list goes on.
This is a pretty common occurrence from what I read. Experts say that up to 75% cheat on a partner. Sad but true. I think a lot less would cheat if they sat down with their partner and let them know they are feeling like straying, it sure takes the whole illicit aspect out of it anyway.

When they are dissatisfied in their present relationship and refuse to work on the problems that exist. If you love someone and are committed to making things work then going to a third person is never an option. Cheating is a sign of a deep problem and it means the person either wasn't committed or wasn't willing to work through the hard stuff in a relationship.

A cheater is self centered. They do not think about the consequences of their actions. When someone cheats they are not just cheating on their partner but on themselves and the commitment they made. They are cheating on their self respect and devaluing themselves.

1. They don't care about their relationship. At all.
2. They honestly think they can get away with it without hurting anyone and well...they can live with the guilt.
Sums up the 2 reasons people cheat. Pretty general, but think of any cheating situation and one applies.

I don't think they are led there, I think it has to do with the persons morals or lack of them as an individual. Also maybe someone who is disassociated from their emotions might be more likely to cheat, without forseeing the damage or consequences that would occur.
