l think that a German Sheppard would be a nice dog for protection but l do not think they are all that friendly with children. maybe the ones that are in the family but not out of the family circle. A lab can be both protective and gets along with children. And St. Bernard will usually scare some one but is great with children. And l think that any dog you get can be train to protect you if it is trained right. take it though all the obedience classes and then to classes that teach the proper way to have a protective dog. But training is the only way to have the kind of dog you want and breed is not that important.

I have heard that chow chows are the one of the most protective dogs but they can also become quite nasty if not properly trained and controlled.

Really any big dog will probably protect you (Alsation/German Shepherd, Ridge Back, Rockweiler etc) but really any type of dog should be trained and well controlled.

Having said all this all breeds can be protective and all have the potentail to be complete sooks too. I had a beautiful English Bull Terrier who looked fearsome and people actually crossed the street rather than walk past me and yet in reality she was a complete sook and once another dog went for her in the street and she just laid on the floor and yelped until I rescued her!!!

Most embarrassing.

Alternatively, I have heard of Chiuauas that have been off their face and nasty.

I think if you just have the biggest dog - even if its not the protective type the look of it will scare most people off.

First of all, DO NOT get a fox terrier they aren't very nice, but they will protect you . I think , as my own opinion a Sheltie ( Shetland sheepdog) would be a good dog to have . They are very cute and they are big enough that they could protect you. They are friendly and very hyperactive . The only bad part would be they are long haired and they would be kind of hard to groom.

German shepherds would be my first choice. They are very protective of their family but are not overly aggressive dogs. They make great family pets and are more protective over children than anything else. They are also intimidating looking dogs.
My second choice would be a retriever. Whether it be a lab or a golden. They are extremely loyal and loving dogs and are protective over their family.

i was gona say German shepherd but someone already mentioned that..also any dog can be nice if u treat them right! Look it up on google, type in 'types of dogs' or something like that & it will tell u what kinds of dogs are best & their personality.

OR click on this site & it'll show u diff types of dog pic, click on the pic u'd like & it'll give u a lil bit of info'bout the dog.

Better just go to petfinders
They can tell u a bit by the dogs they have & there's even real pictures!!!!!

When my kids were young, I got a German Shepherd, and he was a great dog with the kids, and a great protector for the entire family! I knew if he was in the yard with the kids, they were safe! He watched them better than some people you could pay to watch your kids. They love to be with the family, and watch over them. My kids could even take anything off of my dog, and he was very gentle with them, but wouldnt let strangers near us or them unless we said it was alright. I have had 2 more German Shepherds since then, and loved them all! Good luck with what ever dog you get!

It really depends. Most dogs, no matter the breed, are very sweet. But I have found that Doberman Pinschers are great dogs that would intimidate a stranger because of their size and protectiveness. Try going here: http://www.geocities.com/athens/1878/dobefaq.html

I say a Boston Terrier if you are looking for and inside doge. Pit if and out side. My late Boston would let me know of anything that was going on if it was not normal. My Pit is outside and he let 's me know if he see's something outside. He don't bark unless he has a reason. I'm home alone most of the time and right now I depend on my Pit to let me know if something isn't right. My Pit will do anything to protect my family and if I tell him it's OK when some one pulls in my yard, he stops barking and keeps he eye on us.

any of them, I have a pit, a rott and 2 mixes. they are all protective yet friendly, I had a lab that was friendly but was very protective when I was sleeping. so any dog can learn to do it just by liking you.
