Could be several things:
1. He's insecure because he has had a bad experience with losing a girlfriend in the past.
2. He's insecure because he just thinks he's a natural loser. He has a low self-esteem.
3. He's acting insecure in order to better control you.
Its gotta be one of those three. Take your pick.

Because he is insecure. Tell him of an old adage: If you love something set it free, if it comes back you will have it forever, if not you did not have it in the first place.

You are so special to him that he fears other guys will see what he has seen. He is also scared that he is unworthy of the person that you are. He thinks that you will find someone out there that you like more. Its the ultimate form of flattery....
