I've lost a friend whom retired sometime around 2000-2002, last duty station was Cherry Point, North Carolina

www.vetfriends.com is a website to try but you have to pay for membership to get the best results and its still kind of iffy. The VA will not tell you anything because of the privacy laws. Try looking around for a book called "How to locate Military Personnel". It gives you addresses you can write. One of the options is to send a letter to one certain address and they will try to find the person and forward the letter to them for around three dollars. If you know where he went after he retired, then try to find him on yahoo people search or something like that.

Ask the administrative officer of the Marine Corps Veterans Association for the address of a retiree.
