I want to keep it but I am afraid it was used in a crime. What should I do? It isn't rusty, it's stainless steel .357 Magnum S&W

I do not know what state you are in and the laws vary from state to state. The obvious answer is to turn the gun over to the police. The one thing I will tell you to do is call your local police department and explain how and where you found (caught) the gun and ask them if they want you to bring the gun in or if they would send an officer out to you. If they want you to bring the gun in ask them what procedures they recommend so that you are violating any of the local laws.
The gun may have been used in a crime and could be the one piece of evidence to close the case.
Another possibility is that some one inadvertantly lost the gun while on the water.
Either way you should turn the gun over to the police. If the gun was not used in a crime then after a set period if it is unclaimed you can still get the gun back but if it was used in a crime most likely it will be destroyed.

Forget keeping it, if it was thrown in a lake then the chances are about 90% that it was used in a crime. So I would turn it into the police and tell them where you found it.

If you keep it and it was used in a crime then how would feel if the police tied an old murder case to you! It is just safer to let the police handle it and forget it.

The problem is that if you take it to the police station and do not have a firearms permit (this depends on which state you are in) and a firearms permit is required you could be charged with carrying a firearm without a permit. Some states are really picky about carrying around a gun, and you do not want to be charged with possession of an unregistered firearm. Call the police and tell them you found it in a stream and let THEM fish it out.

It would be best to leave it where you found it and not take it anywhere for the above reasons. Notify the police and let them take care of it.

Keep it. Show it to your friends. Have some no-friend idiot report you. Have the po-lice bust down your door, grab the gun, run a check. Pay for a lawyer to defend you against the whole deal and maybe the crime it has been used for in the past. Get a criminal record.

Or hand it in.

For God's sake turn it in to the police. You could help solve a murder and in the process prevent yourself from being charged with a crime.

I would call the nearest police station and turn it in IMMEDIATELY. It very well may have been used in the commission of a crime and/or could be stolen AND I believe it's illegal NOT to turn it in.

Take it to the nearest police or FBI station. You have to do what's right. You could actually solve an unsolved mystery.

Honestly, turn it into the police. It could prove usefull eveidence against a killer. They can run the serial numbers. If you try to sell it, You can, however if it is used in another crime, it can be traced back to you.

Turn it in. I don't know what state you live in but you may have to get a gun permit and you would be breaking the law if you did not get one.
