I am looking for advice from those who have suffered lower back pain and changed mattresses. I have heard conflicting stories as what really works. What was your experience? Thanks.

Most people in the world should be sleeping on a firm. This prevents displacement of the nucelus of the vertebral discs (prevents bulging and herniated discs)...especially for back and side sleepers. For people who have stenosis, however, pain is not being caused by the disc, but because there is a narrowing in the canal in which the spinal cord sits. This canal gets tighter with more erect postures, and is "looser" when the spine is accomodated to a flexed posture. Therefore, a matress that accommodates this position and does not try to force the spine straight will usually give you more relief. Therefore, a softer matress or a firm matress with a good pillow top may be more ideal as opposed to a firm one.

I have stenosis and both cervical and lumbar disc disease. My old (relatively new) very firm mattress was just killing me. I bought a new high quality medium firmness mattress that has an inch of memory foam embedded in the top pillow layer of the mattress. It's very cushy and soft yet after you sink a few inches in the mattress is fairly firm. The top portion of the mattress cost 6-7 hundred dollars on sale and was worth every penny in less pain and more sleep. Your mileage may vary, but that's what worked for me. good luck

I bought a memory foam matress and gave it away. I hated it. It didn't releive any of my pain and it was very hot in the summer because it comforms to your body so tightly. I bought a fairly firm matress and then just threw a cheap sleeping bag on top as a cushion. It's amazing how that sleeping bag releived years of pain that chiropractors, massage therapists and pain pills couldn't. So, if I were you, I would buy a one of those matresses with those extra pads on top. Or you could do like I did and use a thick blanket on top to cushion your spine as long as you have firm support underneath.

If you want a mattress get a rock mattress meaning a hard mattress, that will keep your back straight and not slouched. Thats is what my grandma has.
