It's based on an old superstition which stated that a sneeze was the soul trying to escape. So you don't want that to happen. So you say 'God bless you' in the hopes that will prevent your soul from leaving the body. The same idea is behind the German "gesundheit", which translates as 'good health'.

I think it was a way to Bless someone a long time ago- because people thought that if you sneezed, you would die, so they would Bless them. I think somewhere in this jibberish, there is an explanation. :) God Bless and Be Safe :)

It had something to do, a long time ago, that when somebody sneezed, they were close to death at the moment of the sneeze, and at that time the Devil could sneak in. Silly superstition. Most peole don't know why it's said, but they say it out of custom and good manners to show concern for the sneezer.

I agree with opinionat that is why I seldom say Bless you when someone sneezes. I don't believe in superstition..if I know the person might get offended if I don't say bless you then I will say it.
God's blessings should not be taken lightly.

people used to think that the soul could escape through the mouth/nose when a person sneezed. so "God Bless You" is a proper response to someone who may or may not have lost possession of their soul.

It all started with a silly superstition that said when you sneeze you are blowing all of the demons out of you through your nose. It is natural to bless someone after they have got rid of their demons.
