It is a natural instinct and most people would say yes, but I say NO! My mom has three dogs...A Rhodesian Ridgeback, A Great Pyrenees and a Chow-Chow/Mutt. The Great Pyrenees, believe it or not, LOVES THE OCEAN! He will chase the waves out as far as the leash will let him, but the Rhodesian is DEATHLY scared of the water. Once he got out into the waves and got so scared that he jumped on the back of the Pyrenees and RODE him back to shore. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen! I would always watch your dog very carefully in the water...Just from experience! Good Luck!

My daughter had an English Bulldog, and you cant have them around water, because they CANT swim! Its the way their weight is distributed, they will just sink! Im not sure if any other breeds have this problem, but that breed is much better on land! They are really cute and loveable though, they just look like a tough dog, but they are sweet and affectionate.

My brother has a German Shorthaired Pointer that CANNOT swim. He is not afraid of the water, he actually likes it, but only when he can stand. When he goes in the water his rear end just sinks. No matter what. We had him in the shallow end of our pool and he walked along the bottom with his two back feet. So we took him over to the deep end only to find out that he sinks. Even with all fours moving. It took two of us to keep him afloat in the deep end.

No, not all dogs can swim.

They all have the ability but some don't know how. My Golden was kept it a 5'x5' kenel (24/7) before we got him. He had no clue how to swim. Now that he's figured it out, we can't keep him out of the water.

NO! My pug has been knocked into the pool by my other dog and almost drown before we knew what happened. We pulled her out in time, but she would have been a goner if we hadn't.

Yeah, I think so. My husband put my dog in the pool for the first time in her life and she started swimming instantly.

as soon as they are coordinated enough to walk they do have the natural instinct to swim but i would let them learn on their own verses just throwing them in like some people do,that's just mean!

Every dog can, but that doesn't mean that every dog will.
Not a bit different than people, or dinosaurs for that matter.
