rank them from your perspective from greatest to least. dont rank the pits cause of what people say about them it is the owner who makes the mean and agressive.

I have been biten by more labs than any other dog. I have heard that in some states you have to have special insurance if you own a lab just because they can get snappy. Is your thirteen year old big enough and strong enough to play with and walk a dog the size of a german shepard or strong as a pit? I guess the best thing to do is make a list of the pros and cons of each breed and then decide from there. Check with local breeders and get the dog that you like best regardless of breed. Personality is more important in my book.

We might have different ideas on what makes a good dog but i generally think mongrols are better than pure breeds.

Mongrols aside the two best dogs i had were a black labador retriever and a norweigen elkhound, the elkhound was an excelent mouser.

Pit bulls i cant stand,i think the dogs a dud.

Any mongrol with a bit of collie or jack russel cant be too bad either.

Currently have 2 8 week old cavalier king charlie spaniel/jack russel mix, pretty sure theres a basset in there somewhere too.So far the impressions are good.

All the dogs you name will need lots of exercise...
1) Labs are the most fun, but tend to love to jump in muddy ponds!
2) Pit Bulls (I prefer their -real- name, Staffordshire Terrier) are cool; I know a lady who has two of them, and she brought one in to work once...the most dangerous thing about him was his wagging tail!
3) German Shepherds train well, but you're right, they look a bit scary.
I'd get the Lab. Both Staffs and Shepherds require all the humans to be strong alphas, and your 13-year-old might not be able to do that. Labs are a bit more easygoing, plus they make great swimming buddies!

German shepherds
great dogs!! and you can get a pretty one black and red from German blood line.

Pitt is next you are right it is the owner not the breed

lab is last because they are so over breed that they really have lost alot of the original charm.
you can still find good ones but it is hard.
if you want a water/hunting dog how about Goldens

good luck

good luck

Hey kid, if you live n the city you should get a small dog. Big dogs are happier being on farms not cooped up in some small house or yard all day unless you wal them for a couple hours a day. . Many small dogs were bred as INDOOR dogs. Not the ones you listed ANd if you get a pit bull your house insurance will be cancelled!. They consider them a dangerous dog breed. So keep that in mind. Youll thank me later.

ok well... I choose LABRADOR ALL THE WAY!!!! we have 3 kids in our house and we have 3 labs...{one of each color)
out youngest is 13 too...so I say labs///
then I say german shepherds...had no experience w/ them but I think they might be a little better than a pit bull...
but I think you should get a lab!!!
they are GORGEOUS! and GREAT dogs!!
