No that word Mentally retarded is a sick work, people with down syndrome is like anyone else, and wants the same things that everyone else wants. It is just they were born with a problem, and so people like to call them retarded. If you were to look that word up it means, something that you are not very good at, so in that case, everyone is retarded in something, and you don't see them being called retarded, I prefer, to use the word learning disable, and they do learn, and sometimes they learn a lot faster then you think.
so if you know some one with down syndrome just try to remember that they are not retarded, they were just born a little different, but they are actually the same as you, an I, and thus should be treated that way.

Well, yes. Down Syndrome causes mental retardation due to abnormal cell division involving the 21st chromosome. The syndrome is developed in uteri. The level of impairment does vary by individual however, and some people with the syndrome can be quite highly functioning, but some cognitive problems are still present.

Children born with Down's syndrome typically have an additional 23rd chromosome, but there are several other causes besides this. This genetic abnormality causes a multitude of potential problems with mental retardation being the most prevalent. heart conditions are also common. The child with the syndrome can have normal IQ to severely retarded. They run the gamut on the IQ scale. Most people see a child with Down's syndrome and assume they are retarded and this is not always the case.

I thought I would add an article:

If you listen to scientists who specialize in academic research into Down’s syndrome, or to the Down’s Syndrome Association, there is basically nothing a parent can do to prevent the profound mental deficits and impaired growth of a Down’s child. But if you listen to Dixie Lawrence, a devoted adoptive mother of one Down’s child, or to Dr. Jack Warner, a California pediatrician with a ten-year history of treating Down’s children, there is plenty that parents can do. In fact, this small group of motivated parents and dedicated practitioners has succeeded in doing what the authorities have decreed to be impossible — the normalization of Down’s children’s growth rates and mental abilities. Down’s children treated with this new smart-nutrient and/or smart-drug treatment program are now being mainstreamed into public schools on a routine basis. Their growth rates are equivalent to those of normal children, and the IQs of those children started on the program early in life are comparable to normal children. One 5-year old Down’s girl even has a documented IQ of 140!

I misspoke, it is the 21st. Thank you Sophia.

Yes by and large they are because this means they will never have the capabilities of a 'normal' person (sorry hate that word normal), but it doesn't mean they have no understanding at all. There are varying degrees of Down's syndrome and it is still being studied by doctors/scientists who do not know why the extra chromosme 21 is present. People with Down's are loving, kind, trusting, honest and beautiful people, they are truly blessed.

Yes. There are many different severity levels of the syndrome. Some are quite functional. Most need to be taken care of all their lives. All of them are mentally retarded.
