In Islamic law if you convert to another religion you can be sentenced to death. I want to know why, because I think the most important part of any religion should be to accept people as who the are and who they chose to be.

I want to say that I am not religious at all. I just feel that Islamic nations have a particular hate towards people of other religions. In the UK we bend over backwards to make Islamic people feel more comfortable in our country, apparently it is even offensive to say christmas infront of muslims. And for me this is so sad because they come to live in a christian country and they refuse to adapt to the wider community and accept that they are not living in an Islamic country anymore.. People here are equal men and women alike.

Yes I agree, they should be there because they want to be, not because they are forced to or too scared to be.

That is not a part of Islamic law. That is part of the law of some nations, which have a national religion. If the people of that nation object to the laws of their government, they have every right to change them.

I agree that religious people should accept and respect people whose beliefs are different from theirs - we can learn a lot from each other if arrogance can be put aside.

But that doesn't mean that apostates won't pay the penalty in the afterlife.

Bremner has it completely wrong Iran is a Shia country Saddam was a Sunni as are the great majority of Muslims
The new Iraqi government is Shia like Iran
sorry about that i know it wasn`t your question
Its not other religions that that disgusts SOME Muslims ,Its the interference of western governments who refuse to stop interfering in Muslim mainly Arab countries .They have been manipulating and causing trouble for years out of greed and wanting things to suit their agenda .as a result they have caused misery and suffering to countless Arabs Christian as well as Muslim People need to separate politics and nationality from religion There are well over a Billion Muslims of many different nationalities all over the world and if they are all disgusted at other religions Muslims a nd other religions live together in peace in most countries as they did in Iraq before the invasion .in fact Iraq had one of the lowest crime rates in the world
and even the people persecuted there were persecuted because of politics .There was even a Christian in Saddam's government

the matter is not disgusting or something like that, on the contrary ISLAM respects the other religions and it was mentioned on it . and Muslims are ordered to respect other religions or even the people who don't believe on god , and not to forget that before they were Muslims they had been one of them ( of course i don't mean that Christians or Jewish = UN believers ) but some of the Muslims had been UN believers no doubt & bcz ALISLAM was sent to the whole of the universe so all the Muslims must don't forget that.

and for the sentencing part i am with u its a rule in the Islam but usually it's not been followed and there r people who had entered in AL ISLAM a came back and nothing happened 4 them and they r well known to every 1 they didn't have to hide or something like dat.

its a matter of rules no more like stealing in Islam if a thief steal ed his hand must be cut now days they prison him other beliefs have another rules to punish thieves.

its rules not more & not usually followed

and for ur info in egypt althought we r an islamic country we take the 7th of january as an official holiday. andthere is also another day it is usually in april but i dont know its name but it is official also.
and here we dont have diffrences between chrisitian & muslim

The writer who said Islam and non Islam get along fine together obviously never heard of the Iran v Iraq war. Do the Sunnis get on with the rest of Islam? Not if Iraq is anything to go by. Two sets of Islamics are trying to blow each other to bits! Toleration indeed.

Those Islamic nations are not really Islamic as they claim to be.

A respectable contemporary Muslim thinker, Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer writes:

If one goes by the Qur'anic pronouncements Islam not only accepts the legitimacy of religious pluralism but considers it quite central to its system of beliefs. There are very clear statements to this effect. First we will refer to the verse 5:48 in this respect. The verse goes as follows:" Unto every one of you We have appointed a (different) law and way of life. And if Allah had so willed, He could surely have made you all one single community: but (He willed it otherwise) in order to test you by means of what He has given you. Vie, then, with one another in doing good works! Unto Allah you all must return; and then He will make you truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ." This is very seminal statement in favour of religious and legal pluralism which Muslims, specially the Muslim regimes, have not considered seriously. Many classical as well as modern commentators have commented on this significant verse...It is unfortunate that most of the Muslim countries do not adhere to this spirit of pluralism and diversity in the Qur'an and sunnah. The extremists and fundamentalists among the Muslims in these countries attack the spirit of pluralism and want to create a monolithic society.

Muslims just enforce it, in the bible it says "though shalt not wordhip false idols" Seeing as Jesus whipped Jews in the temple who made people buy speical tokens , then it wouldn't be a far stretch to say you can whip people who break christianities word.

Ehh religion causes intolerance rather than foster it. The bible was for a long time misinterpreted where it says "Ham was cursed to be black" people used to to supress black people. Christian thugs beating up homosexuals.

Islam, Christianity and Judaism all messed up. Take up buddhism or taoism.

According to Quran converting to other religion is not to be punishable by death. As it states in 2:256 "Let there be no compulsion in religion..."

I don't know where you receive your information on Islam, but you should know that Islam DOES NOT penalize individuals for converting to other religions, by death. It is not our responsibility to lay judgment on such religious decisions. They will have to face GOD for judgment, not us. Their actions will be only judged by GOD and surely whatever judgment is passed by GOD is best.
