At the begining of december my dog went thru heat she had an appt. to get fixed on dec14th but due to her going into heat my vet charged an extra $250 i tried to get the money together before her appt but could not so i had to reschedule for jan 18th (far enough so we all knew she would be out of heat) i also have a male dog that we had to keep seperated from her thru her heat cycle we kept him outside and her inside or her upstairs and him downstairs but there were about 3-4 times that they got together and went at it, but for the most part she did not want him. here it is about 2-3 weeks after her heat cycle and her nipples are still swollen, her "stuff" is no longer swollen. so at this point how, if at all, would i know if she is pregnate without going to the vet? (they will charge me a minimum of $199 that i want to use to get her fixed if she is not pregnat) we have kind of planned for her to be pregnate and arranged a few happy homes for pups but how do we know at this point?

If your dog is PREGNANT, you will know by swollen breasts, and belly. The gestation period of dogs is 63 days or so.

Some go into a false pregnancy that will last after the cycle and swollen nipples are a typical sign. Unfortunately it can be hard to tell if she is pregnant til she is well along, when some good vets can feel the puppies, or by x-ray. Usually they would not have swollen nipples soon after getting pregnant but only closer to actually whelping.

You can spay her now regardless. This may likely be the far less costly and certainly less risky option than having the puppies, if they are there -- as complications can risk the life of your female, and you may end up with needing a costly procedure like a caesarean, which will be a LOT more than $199 (so will the costs of raising puppies for eight weeks minimum: regular vet checks, food, formula, worming, shots, etc). Are you ready to deal with stillbirths or deformed puppies (mummy or swimmer puppies); do you know what to do if she starts having the puppies then stops; do you know how to tell when she has passed the last puppy; etc?

You might want to have a read of these links of breeder stories and advice, to see if you are really ready to deal with a whelping:

She sounds pregnate to lme.

The only way to be absolutely sure is the vet. But if you are saving to get her fixed then by the time you have the money and take her to the vet then you will know or he/she will be able tell you.

Your Akita would desire to never be left off a leash until in a fenced backyard, they are huge stong canines and don't continually get exhilaration from unusual canines drawing close them, your loved ones is accountable, ask somebody to take you to a Vet and supply her a test, and you do not sound such as you will desire to be a breeder, alongside with approximately eighty% of the different breeders

she could be having a phantom pregnancy, but make sure her mammory glands don't get to hard as this could be matitus painful for her, also if you feed her mor food than usual she will make more milk which is not good you can get her scanned by a dog scanner who visits your house does not cost as much as the vet they normally do it when she is 4-5 weeks gone from her 1st mating (if you think she has been)

Sounds like your going to have puppies to me.
It takes approximately 62 days. So get the nursery room set up. If you want to know how many puppies she is going to have you can have her x-rayed by your vet and they can tell you how many she is going to have. I have my dog x-rayed every time.

Good Luck and hopefully you will get her spayed right after the puppies are weaned!

You will just have to wait and see. I would not take her to the vet to get her fixed until you know for sure that she is not. Only time will tell.

it sounds like you need to get that $199 ready to see if she is really pregnate,or wait it out because if she is time will tell.

She may be. Also, try locating a local spay/neuter clinic or contact your local shelter as they may be able for you to get her spayed at a reduced price.
