You do not study meditation, you practise meditation.
Go to your local library or book shop and lend or buy a book describing the many different types of meditation.
Zazen Meditation, (Zen) can be practised while sitting in a chair or in the traditional cross legged position, but with one foot in front of the other, while a cushion is placed under your bottom to give support.
I mentioned the chair due to the fact that if you have never sat in the traditional position, you might find it uncomfortable as your limbs might not be supple enough.
Your hands should be rested with your left hand cradled inside your right hand, open and relaxed just below your groin area.
Your eyes should be just slightly open.
Breathe normally but be aware of each breath, but do not count each breath, instead one can think of each breath as "in, out in out"
Let your thoughts flow yet do not become attached to any thoughts, relax the mind.
It sometimes is helpful to think of thoughts as clouds floating by a clear blue spacious and endless sky, which is a metaphor for the state of mind which is tranquil.
There are many Buddhist groups who welcome beginners, who are not nessecarily buddhists.
Do not be afraid to approach any group, explain to them that you wish to learn meditation practises, for relaxation purposes and I am sure they would welcome you and help guide you in the right direction. there are many different types of meditation, some helpful for depression, anxiety, while others are helpful for insight and building compassion.
With buddhist groups they can provide an ideal quiet enviroment to practise meditation.

It depends on what kind of meditation you want to do. New Age meditation you can simply learn on your own. Buddhist meditation is best when you have a "teacher" or "guide" at least to start and they can teach you how to do it at home or with a group at your nearest Buddhist center or such. Zen Buddhists meditate a little different from Theravadins and from Tibetan Buddhism... different types of Buddhism meditate a little differently.

Hi,
As you have named yourself Scot Pines, may I suggest going to a pine wood, sitting down with a dram or three, shut your eyes, and dream up a great poem..
I do that on my boat roof under a tree, and came up with bridge over troubled waters again. Except it was under troubled waters.
No, I don't smoke funny stuff, but I agree, a few minutes of peace and thought is very relaxing.
I suggest, therefore, a boat.
Bob the Boat.

First you need to know what the real purpose of meditation is, then you need to find the most elevated process.
