Recently a girl told me 'annwyl' was hello in welsh. However my Collins pocket dictionary refers to it as beloved. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Annwyl means dear as in beloved (not expensive) .It can be used in letters :- Annwyl Sion, Dear John.
The Welsh national anthem has the line " Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn ANNWYL i mi...."
"The ancient land of my fathers is DEAR to me..."
'rwyt ti'n ANNWYL...you're (a) DEAR.
My beloved would be..F' annwylyd.

I've just read your question again and see you wanted the South Wales version...with this word there is no difference in usage between the South and the North, just a slight difference in pronounciation.

Annwyl means "dear" and is used to start letters.
It is also used as "beloved" and as such is a girl's name.

I have never been on such terms with a person named Annwyl as to correspond with her, but I would love to begin a letter: "Annwyl Annwyl".

Annwyl is of Welsh origin, and its meaning is "loved one".

"Hello" is the same in Welsh or else we say "Bore da", which means "good morning" or "prynhawn da", which is "good afternoon". I've never used "annwyl" except when writing a letter. In South Wales we say "cariad" to mean "darling". I think that has a nicer ring to it.
