I seem to recall that in the early 20th century, the only free medical care, orphanages, and care for the homeless came from churches. Then we started all of these socialist systems.
I believe churches do a better job at servicing the community than our government. If our government does a bad job, people loose their job. If someone at a church does a bad job, they can go to hell. It's a strong incentive.
Because a church's funds are made up of donations from its members, I have no problem with them offering free healthcare to the needy.
Regardless, the IRS still checks their books. You would be pleased to note that the vast majority are not for profits. If they are, they pay taxes like everyone else.
A similar question is wether schools should be for profit as well. I think it is safe to say that it is against public policy for such institutions to do that sort of thing. Thankfully, it is very rare when it happens, and very easy to find out through the public records of the IRS.

Nope, monies collected mostly go to paying bills and charity.
My step-father is a pastor and makes a very meager salary and the church members get to vote on how the monies are allocated, so the pastor has no say in it, which is good. So in reality many organizations where the money is collected from the patrons, they get decide themselves how their money is given back to the community.

You would have to define profit.
The organization should meet is monetary obligation to its debtors.
To bank hundreds of thousand would be maleficent to me. They should be directing that money to the glory of God. For example taking care of the poor, missionary work and helping those in general distress.

I think it's ok for profit to be a small part of it, but it shouldn't be the main focus.

Yes, not only does the church have many expenses, but our church also helps a lot of people, and it also takes A LOT of money to reach others for Christ.
