Lol yea it is stupid... people are like "Who is better, Steve Nash or Kevin Garnett?" and they are both good in their respectable roles. It would be different if Nash was averaging 12 rebounds along with his 12 assists, then also two blocks. I would be the first to say Nash is better, but since that isn't happening now, or anytime soon, I think we should continue to compare point guards to point guards and power forwards to power forwards. KG vs. Jermaine O'Neal and Nash vs. Kidd.

Same position when looking at positional stats but also looking at height for some positions when say you have a 6 foot 9 Magic like point guard who can get more rebounds than a typical 6 foot 2 point guard

only two positions that are similiar enough to maybe not disregard is shooting guard/small forward comparisons

I agree you can't compare say Dwight Howards fg% to Chris Paul or somebody because position wise they have to do different things to score from their positions

also you have to take time periods into consideration when trying to compare players from many generations apart

You are right man, you can't.
I'm thinking you can never compare "Accuratly"
How do you compare Shaq to Chamberlain when they are so many years apart, their teammates and the rules are all different?
How can you compare James to Kobe or Wade, when they have different situations and different styles and different positions?
How can you compare Magic to Nash, when their style are different?
People might compare MJ with Kobe, maybe...
you can never compare players fairly, so Chamberlain scored 100, but it's nearly impossible now, all you could see it's Kobe's 81.
So Magic was the show time, but Nash is the best passer right now.

I think the stars are great as individuals, they shouldn't be compared. They are all great players, live with that, comparing is unfair.

If you're doing it by the numbers then it is probably appropriate to have them be the same position. Personally though, I think they can play different positions as long as the person doing the comparison takes into account how well they play in their position and then compares that, rather than just comparing how well they play in general.

if you want to measure the stats i guess you need players in the same position to have an accurate and fair comparison.
it's a scientific approach as to how you compare the two players.

if you compare a center and a guard...
centers would probably have more rebounds and blocks and higher feild goal percentage....
guards would be more inclined to have more three-point feild goals, steals, assits etc...

but the impact of the player to a team transcends positions...
there is no scientific way to measure the player's x-factor.

It depends on the situation and the team. To me players are judged on how they affect their team. For example, Tim Duncan is the Spurs and Wade is the Heat. I can say that Wade is better than Duncan based on Miami losing games when he is injured. If Miami loses more than Spurs when both Duncan and Wade are out then it seems obvious that Wade is the better player. Thats just my opionion.

confident i agree. Kobe is a organic scorer, he has sturdy D, yet he would desire to not pull down 7-10 rebounds a recreation like Lebron. Kobe has passing ability besides, yet not as sturdy as Lebron. the two excell at their aspects of the sport.

Well...you can compair them by how they improved/helped/etc. the team, their attitudes.....Thats the way to cpmpair if there is two different positions.....Not like: "AI is better than Shaq cause he can hit three's".
