If you look from outside the front windshield, right next to the drivers support post. You can even try the registration.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

If it is not on the dash or the registration - check the side of the transmission for a metal tag that should list the number. Depending on the year and if it is the original transmission it should also be there. I know from 1979 until 1991 it was that way on all automatic transmissions.

Look under the hood, on the fire wall right below the brake master cylinder. The second number in the Vin # will tell you the year. For example 5 means 1975 in cjs made between 1970-1979.

In models prior to 1980 the VIN number should be on a metal plate right on the fire wall right below the brake master cylinder. You can try to decode it here:
http://jeepresource.com/tech/cj5.html
In models from 1981 to 1995 you’ll find it in the windshield frame, looking from the outside almost in front of the steering wheel, and you can decode it here:

Depending on the year, it could be on the dash, the firewall cowl tag in the engine bay or the driver side door jamb. The above answer is not correct by no means. The second number in the VIN is the manufactures code.
