Yes your dog has a problem, my dogs ears smell at times and all I do is put a few drops of pure coconut oil (Nui brand) on a cotton bud and or just on my fingers and massage the oil around the inside of both ears. I suggest it could be from the dogs diet (commercial I'll wager!). Because the dog scratches his ears with his feet, I find myself also putting coconut oil on the paws as well with great results, however I prefer to change the diet.

Yeast will have a pungent smell far different then the infective smell.
Obviousely your dogs ear is painful and infected wether it be a yeast infection or bacterial infection, he needs to get seen by a vet for proper treatment.
Red pastey/waxy debree in the ear can be either bacterial or yeast infection, the only way to be certain is to swab the ear and test it under a microscope.
Sometimes its a yellowish tint, but like I said the only for sure way to is to determine under a microscope.
Dark black waxy or grainy is usually an over infestation of mites
They will do a simple ear swab to determine if its yeast, mites or a bacterial infection, clean your pups ear, and then treat the ear with the proper medication.

Careful who you listen to. My dog had similar symptoms. Went to the same vet for about 2 years, many antibiotic, washes, special food, even pure venison dog food. Our Vet suggested that some dogs have chronic ear problems, especially those with long floppy ears. We treated our dog for two years but our vet then suggested we go to a Vet College and our dog was diagnosed with a bacteria infection. The cause a slow growing cancerous growth in her ear. So don't wait too long to go above your Vet to a Vet teaching college for a thorough diagnosis. The earlier it is detected the easier it can be treated. The smell can be awful, and the odor stays on your hands even after several washings.
This may not have been what you wanted to hear, but be persistant with your vet and stay on top of this. Good luck!

Pls ignore Mac Attacks answer -- it sounds like your dog has a yeast infection or something of that nature -And you should NEVER EVER put anything in your dog's ears unless it is prescribed to your dog from a vet - you can really do more harm than good -- try to keep water out of his ears if possible - that's USUALLY the culprit when it comes to ear problems - the ears do have a yeasty odor, they become itchy and sensitive. . . I had a Golden Retriever who was very prone to these things and I have a lot of experience with it. . . Bring him to the vet as soon as the first sign of a problem is showing itself. It is common in goldens, labs, generally "water dogs" because of their love for water.

IT does sound like a YEAST infection. You need to get some medicine from the vet. It willl be a salve and probably get some Oticalm. IT is an earwash that you can flush the ears out with and will clean them but also make them feel better.

Based on my experience, ( my dog has allergies) and developes yeast infection often. I must give you a BIG WARNING. Weather it is an infection or mites you need to have it checked and treated ASAP. It could lead to hearing loss or a hematoma of the ear flap from shaking his head and it could cost more in the end, plus it will make him suffer. Dogs are more sensitive in some ways and something you think might tickle them could really be hard on their nerves. They cant tell us how bad it is so its our job to make sure they are cared for. Good Luck.

could be ear mites
you could get meds from vet or just keep mineral oil in his ear. It wont hurt him people can use it for earaches. It will smother the mites and sooth his skin. You know you coud rub neosporin + pain on his ears to help with the pain and it will probably do like the minerel oil and smother the little buggers

No one here, not even a licensed vet tech or a licensed vet can diagnose your dogs ear problem. This dog needs to GO to a vet and have it checked to get a proper diagnosis and proper treatment.
*******It likely is NOT earmites, dogs don't commonly get ear mites*******
PLEASE DO NOT SELF MEDICATE OR USE OTC MEDICATIONS!!!!
