Is there a difference between the two types. And also if there is will they breed with each other or are they otherwise know as two completely different species. Also are the males solid green or do they have a little yellow on their heads?

Yellow headed amazon...I think you mean yellow nape, or
yellow crowned. The double yellow head and the yellow head
are definitely two different types.I don't think they will breed.
Depends on the birds, but both are a little aggressive. (When placed in the same cage) I would suggest a lot of caution. They
learn fast and talk really well. The double yellow head can be a bit nippy and possessive. Plus they like to be herd..they can be
really loud squawkers. Most male parrots are brightly colored.
I can't tell my female from my male...had to have them
surgically sexed to see which was which. There are a lot of good books out there, with good advise. An plenty of good sites on the
the computer........just type in your birds type.

There is a difference in the two types, indicated by the pattern of the yellow on their heads. A double yellow-headed amazon has more yellow extending farther back on his head as an adult. As a young bird the yellow is just a patch over the beak. There is also a Magna Double Yellowhead that may have more colors on his body, but is the same basic bird, species-wise. There are also yellow-naped Amazons that have a yellow patch on the back of the neck, and yellow-lored Amazons that have a yellow patch in the front of the forehead, and some other varieties of the Amazon parrot.

These birds can interbreed, but it is discouraged by most birding enthusiasts. Because wild birds can no longer be imported to the US, or as of this summer (2007) to the EU, captive breeders may want to consider how their breeding efforts will affect the species.

Male and Female Amazons look the same (they are non-dimorphic) and to determine sex you must have a DNA test from blood from a toenail clipping or a wing clipping. You can find places online to send off the samples.
