I got my wisdom teeth out Tues. morning (so 5 days ago). All four were taken and the bottom right was impacted/near the nerve. 12 hours after the surgery, my lower lip, chin, and front right part of my jaw went numb. I think it has been receding a bit the last couple of days, but the dentist said it could last up to a month. I can move everything, just can't really feel like when i try to put chapstick on. How long until yall could eat normal food (such as food that requires chewing, not necessarily dangerous food like chips or real spicy stuff). I am still only able to eat soups, pudding, etc. and i'm really wanting to eat pasta and chicken etc. I ate a couple of bites of chicken from my soup last night but i had to be really careful and was just a lot of work. How long was it before yall could actually chew fairly easily?

Hey Alli,

I just had my wisdom teeth removed about six months ago. I too, had one tooth that was impacted, so I feel your pain. Talking to many people, including dentists and oral surgeons, the healing time for wisdom teeth extraction truly varies greatyly between people. This is due to blood thickness, blood circulation, healing times and varying degrees of impaction among different people. I was eating a good bit of solid food only days after my wisdom teeth were pulled because my body heals quicky and I avoided dry socket.

It is important that you make sure to avoid dry socket. However sometimes it comes on its own. Yet, five days after an extraction, you are less likely to obtain dry socket if it has not shown up already. If you are still experiencing a lot of pain in the area of your impacted wisdom tooth, it may be dry socket, which can be treated with gauze and medication.

If you are talking about a numness in the lower jaw, this deals primarily with damage to the underlying nerve that the surgeon told you about. Usually, this goes away completely in a month or less. In very rare instances, the nerve does not completely heal and there may be some numbness that never recedes. But, that is very unlikely, so it should go away within weeks.

In terms of food, you should be fine to eat solids soon. Just be careful to chew in other areas of the mouth. You will get better at it in the coming few weeks. :)

Saturday will be 4 days...hmmmm, you should definetely be feeling ALOT better by then. I got mine taken out a week and a half ago, and I have felt great for quite some time now. Just be sure to ice your face today, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, then after today, switch to heat, as that will REALLY help with the swelling. Also, in addition to any pain meds your dentist has given you, take 600mg of Ibprofen as well. That really helped my swelling too. After today as well, rinse your mouth out with warm salt water to help any infection. And don't drink through a straw, or smoke, because you definetely do not want to get dry socket! If there is anything else you would like to know, email me. I just had this done myself, and I can be helpful. Good luck!

What? My mouth never went numb...I had them taken out, all 4, about a month ago, and all bleeding was over in 2 days. The only numbness I had was the general anesthesia for about 4 hours.

For food, I was on mushroom soup, chicken soup, and mashed potatoes for 3 days, and I even added hot sauce and pepper. A lot of it. There was no problem from chicken soup. For real chewing, you should be able to chew most stuff by one week max, and full chewing power (stuff like peanut brittle) back in 2 weeks. Just make sure you don't go for the chunkier soups, stick with regular Campbell's.

MAKE SURE YOU EAT MUSHROOM SOUP, A LOT OF IT. THE MUSHROOM HELPED HEALING. AND YOU NEED PROTEIN FROM CHICKEN SOUP.

It sounds as though your doctor botched it and hit your nerve while removing...might want to go in and check it out...
