I believe Bipolar (Manic Depressive) disorder is real for I have it. I spent several year being treated for my depression with no success. It wasn't until I went into the hospital this past year that I finally got the proper treatment for my disorder & I am now very close to feeling back to myself. They're still working with my doses of my meds. I believe (not an expert) that the disorder lies within you & tramautic events like ignites it. I have been thru sexual abuse, rape, & some other things. Funny that you say broken spirit, though, 'cause that's how I felt for so long. I want to add that even though I have it & I really do feel I do because I have studied so much about it, I do feel a lot of people get misdiagnosed. I just posted on my 360 about my personal Bipolar if interested the link is below.

Bipolar disorder is a biological disorder caused primarily by a chemical imbalance. While depression can be modified by psychotherapy, bipolar disorder does not respond very well to psychotherapy alone. That suggests that this is not caused by traumatic events, bad parenting, or any other factor like that. However, psychotherapy can be useful in order to deal with problems created during manic or depressive phases, medication adherence, and other general problems. There is no known etiology to bipolar disorder other than genetic factors.

Having done a lot of research on the subject, I believe bipolar is a neurological disorder. The brain of a bipolar person works differently. There is absolutely a biological basis to this illness.
Genetics play a large part - but environment does seem
to contribute to a person actually developing the illness.

Yes it is. I am living with someone that has it and the funny thing is all the descriptions I read online about it is very... different? The person is very irrational and I mean VERY irrational. Sometimes it's just so hard to deal with. It is a mental disease. Medication is used to help deal with it but medication can only go so far...

I think people with mental issues just need someone to talk to and relax! Maybe take a vaction and set their mind strait. No presciptions! I don't really know to much about mental problems, but I don't believe that pills will solve anything. They will just prolong the problem and cover it up. How are people ever going to get better taking strong doses of medicine that say may lead to greater problems on their commercials.

I've been BP for years and its not that big a deal. I'm leveled off by lithium so my mood swings are not dramatic. Before I was diagnosed and on meds. I had some pretty serious mood swings. If I can help anyone please e-mail me.

GENETIC CHEMICAL IMBALANCE with a backdrop of sometimes drug and alcohol abuse as self-medication.
Its just one of those things that requires the talk therapy and medicine.
