I've noticed a slight discharge of blood coming out of my left ear(when i'm cleaning with cotton wool sticks)I know you shouldnt put anything in your ear so I only clean round the opening , so it isn't caused by me poking inside of the ear

hey dude... get yourself to the doctors asap. He'll have a proper look round with the proper equipment and should put your mind at ease, and stop poking around in there, your ear has a self cleaning mechanism...ear wax ! so just brush it away. Once you perferate an ear drum your gona be deaf ! no medication will make it better, once its broke it stays broke.

Are you sick at all? have you been? You might possibly have a ruptured eardrum from an inner ear infection, though I think you would be in significant pain before that happened.

Occasionally people get a little cyst or pimple inside the outer ear, just inside the canal, and if it bursts you can get traces of blood ..

The only way to truly know is to have a professional who knows how to to peek into your ear with an otoscope take a peek in there.

like others have said it could be an ear infection.. however if it is just traces of blood, and you arent having ear pain or any other sign of infection (ie fever), then it could just be a small scab in your ear canal that you keep scratching off each time you clean it.

if you are having any of the following go to the dr.
1. ear pain @ rest
2. fever, chills, nausea
3. sore throat
4. sinus congestion with colored drainage (green/yellow)
5. cough that is productive with sputum and colored as well (green/yellow/brown)
6. any recent head trauma (car accident, sports injury), associated with headache or with clear fluid coming out of your nose or ear (could be from your brain) and a serious sign of injury

if you arent having any of those you *could* think about just taking a few days off from cleaning your ears with an invasive object (qtip) and see if it fixes itself.

however it would be nice to have someone look in your ear to know for sure. officially you arent supposed to use q-tips to clean your ear, but many people do anyway (including me)

edit: the guy below saying "once your eardrum is broke its always broke" is not true. eardrums can heal.

Could be a scratch, an ear infection or a perforated eardrum due to infection. Make an appointment to see the nurse or doctor at your local health centre

Are you sure it isn't just a spot in your ear that you burst and disturb when you clean your ear.

What do you call a discharge?how much blood?

get someone to look in your ear with a torch!

Blood and drainage could mean that your eardrum has torn, allowing the build-up of pressure and fluid behind the eardrum a way to escape. Usually this is treated with antibiotics.

sounds like it may be an infection of the inner ear ... you need to go and have it checked out by a doctor

Most likely you tore or burst your eardrum from an infection. Get it checked out.

It could possibly be a change in the altitude. If you've gone up to the mountains then come down thats what could be bothering it or if you scuba dive.
