If you're having throbbing pain with sensitivity to hot or cold, you really need to see your Dentist, it may well be an abscess and will require antibiotics to clear it up. But in the meantime you can take 600mg of Advil or Motrin, they both work well. Don't hold aspirin or alcohol on the tissue. They tend to burn the tissue causing another problem altogether. Hope I've been of some help. Good luck.

You can try Ambesol (not sure of the spelling, ask for it at a drugstore). It will numb the area, but doesn't last long. Also try taking something like Ibuprofen or some other over-the-counter pain relief.

Clove oil is awesome! Thi is what the dentists use to pack in a dry socket and the same thing older generations used for toothaches. You can find it at the pharmacy. It is usually packaged along with some small cotton balls (pellets) or alone in a small brown vial.

If is because of a cavity , use some sensodyne tooth paste , and take couple of aspirins they are anti inflammatory and try not to eat on that side , until you see your dentist.

Try warm...VERY salty water...alot of the time that will dry out the socket and make it not throb as much...but this is something you have to do alot...and make sure you spit out the water...if you can get prescribed Tylenol #3 that works great for tooth pain.

Last summer, I had some extreme tooth sensitivity (the most awful pain) and I found the things that helped me the most was:
1. Orajel PM. I found that was the best oral pain reliever, and trust me, I have tried alot of them! I would not personally recommend Anbesol, as I have tried that, and I found it just numbed me, and did not help with the pain.

2. Have some warm (not hot) soup-believe it or not, this worked WONDERS with my pain-it totally soothed the senistive spot.

3. And of course, don't wait too long to go to your dentist, otherwise it will just get worse.

5. I also used a pain reliever with these techniques, I think it was advil that helped.

Best of luck!

Tie one end of a piece of thread to the tooth that's hurting and the other end to a door handle. Then slam the door shut!

Have you tried painkiller? I would recommend calling your dentist and scheduling an appointment for as soon as possible though.
