You'll need:
some of the same food the breeder has been feeding
something with the litter mates or mothers scent on it
crate
paper towels
unscented baby wipes
water and food bowls-glass,ceramic or stainless
chew toys designed for puppy teeth
a scheduled visit to your vet within a week of coming home
lots and lots of patience

Bowls, place mat if you don;t want a mess on your floor, puppy training pads, cleaning solution for accidents, collar, leash, ID tag, etc. Those are the main essentials.

For the food, i suggest asking what the breeder was feeding your pup and use that. If you want to switch, gradually change the food to what you plan on feeding him.

Get some good chew toys. Depending on the size of your dog will determine the best ones. I am a huge fan of kong toys, they have ones for puppies, and all size dogs.

Get a crate right away if you plan on crate training. (I highly suggest it, but won't preach about that here.) If you do crate train, the sooner you get the new baby used to it the better. Get a nice soft bed to put in there, make it as comfortable as possible. (the kong toys are great in the crate as well)

You'll also want puppy shampoo, a brush, and grooming supplies.

Have fun with your new family member!

Aside the standard food bed collar etc. Think about where you dog will poop. Are you going to kennel train or just toss the poor thing out into the yard then complain that it craps everyware? Along with your standard supplies look for and read some information on basic training and obedience. Better yet look to someplace like Petsmart for classes you can attend together. You will be much happier with your new freind and so will your neighboors. Associate with a local Vet right off.

The most important thing you can get is a good foundation of knowledge: through books on potty training, obedience and puppy manners.

These books will go over what you need (crate, vaccinations, expectations, etc). Going to breeder websites will help- good breeders list these things and are flat out honest with you.

Arm yourself with knowledge, then get the dog. Both of you will be happier for it.

Make sure he or she has their shots. Then, you want to make sure it is dewormed. After that, you will want to get a kennel ( crate), puppy housebreaking pads, puppy food, dog dish for water, and one for food, small bones, treats ( for housetraining, and basic command training), chew toys you can put in the freezer, puppy bed, puppy toys, collar and leash- preferably a collar that has the puppys identification on it, and emergency numbers. A ball for playing with the puppy, and you may want to consider getting some furniture spray to deter a teething puppy from gnawing on your furniture. I bought most of my stuff when my dog was a puppy from petsmart and wal-mart. You can take your puppy to petsmart with you, but I would make sure the shots and deworming is up to date before you do that. Congrats on your new edition, and good luck!

you have dozens of anwsers what to get the puppy, but don't forget to puppy proof your house. A puppy will chew anything so make sure anything plugged in is so he can't get to chew it. small items up and out of sight. Healthy dog food, and make sure treats are made in USA. other contries use arsnic as a perserative. Stainless steel bowls not plastic. Good luck. and congradulations

The most important thing, after food, or course, is to get a kennel. Get an adjustable one htat can be expanded as your pup gets bigger. This is a must for potty training, and the dogs truly come to love their little homes. When you are not paying full attention to your pup he should be in his kennel. He will not poop or pee that way, and you can train him not to pee in teh house quickly and painlessly this way. You also need a leash, collar, food dish, and lots and lots of toys for him to play with. Get stuff like a Kong, and fill it with peanut butter or biscuits - he will spend hours getting the food out, and leave your shoes alone.

I bought a "blanket" called Pooch Pads. They are absorbent "blankets". They don't attract the dog to pee on them as some training pads do. This absorbs messes. Great for inside the crate and when you put the very small puppy on furniture.
