It is something I have heard in my Spanish culture (and in other Hispanic cultures)---my parents did it to me (they also called me kitten), and I do it to my kids---it is a term of endearment, just as is sweetheart, hunnie-bun, baby-cakes, baby-doll, or anything you may say as endearing the one you love.
No it doesn't "confuse" the child---as I have never grown up thinking I was a kitten, either. On the lighter side, I had a friend whose mom called her "mamita"---or" mama", and she called her mom "hija", which is Spanish for daughter (ee-ha) ( edit: it was a joke. no they weren't confused; they just have a sense of humor)
I have also heard other people (not particularly a cultural thing) call a woman a "mama", as in "Hey pretty mama!!"

I have seen it in two instances: one) the little girl tries to do a lot of things that "grown folks" do so they call her "little mama" because she wants to be grown.
two) a lot of people from New York/Jersey do that. It has been Black or Latino people that I have seen do that.
Me? I don't do it and as long as they love their daughter, I don't care what they call her.

This one family I babysat for called their little girl "Mama" but her name was Maya, and they called her Mama Maya or Mama Mia, so it was kinda cute and it kinda went together. Other than that, I don't know why people do it. I do think that it would confuse the baby! Heheheh!

I've never heard of anyone doing this. I would think they would call her anything but mama. But there are some very weird people out there. Anymore nothing I hear really surprises me.

It is truly a cultural thing......I live in southern Texas and they do it here without thought...kind of like "me ha" or "me ho", it's just a nickname thing. I do it to my female bulldog-I call her mamma's all the time. If you lived in this part of the country it really wouldn't be that strange to you. Take care.

It's a cultural thing. Many Black and Latina mothers do it. It's just a nickname like Sweetie or anything else. It's not confusing.
