Been there a couple of times. When i first went i was a teenager and i'd had about the 'shade' of a monk on the wall in the cathedral and was very intrigued by it. I look around but couldnt find it, and ended up asking some official. When he pointed it out, i was so disappointed, it didnt look like the shadow of an ancient monk to me at all! More like a dirty pillar.

The other bit of interest is of course the fact that Thomas a Becket was murdered there. It seems strange to stand there looking at a place where someone was murdered all those years ago.

I like the fact that the cathedral seems to melt into the town, being so close.

Yes, you are right, Canterbury is 'nice' - very lovely, peaceful near the cathedral.

it's beautiful.
It was even nicer in the days when the Cathedral was free to enter. Then I got to wander in and out everytime I went there!
Friends of mine got married in the the registry office in Canterbury - nice place by the stream, quite scenic, but we dashed round to the Cathedral to take photos on the grass with the building behind and inside in the glorious transcept! They were both Texans working over here - they took the pictures back and told everyone they got married there! Think some people still believe them!

I've fond memories of Cantebury. It brings back lovely memories. We used to be a large family and we went to Whitstable, on a caravan site, for a "family" holiday in 1974. And I mean a family holiday. My mother, father and I, five brothers (three were courting at the time but their girlfriends came too), my aunt and uncle (he was born in Cantebury around the 1920's) his son and daughter and their young families families and another aunt and uncle who had no children.

We got a guided tour of the cathedral, by my uncle, who knew it inside out having lived just over the road to it.

When setting out from the caravan site it was always me that went with my uncle from Cantebury, and we used to meet up with the rest of the family 20 to 30 minutes late. We would be going down a road and he'd say " I haven't been here for years!"

Sadly I'm only left with one of those relations who is now in her early 80's, but she remembers.

I'd recommend it to anyone.

It's a lovely city, and it still has a cathedral (!). As it's nearly 1000 years old, they thought they'd keep it and put the Tesco elsewhere.

It's great for shopping, eating out and is a really lively evening out, especially in the summer.

Does it still have a cathedral? It did the last time I went there, but you know how quickly places get developed these days. I expect there is a Tescos there now
