Dried mucous.

Yes it is a type of eye mucus. Try eating more Vitamin B, I have heard it is caused by a vitamin B shortage. I used to get it, it is really just more annoying than a real problem. I would also put a dab of baby oil or Vaseline on my eyelids, to remove it, but the vitamin b is less messy.

Well your tears are salty just liek all your other body fluids. So when you sleep your eyes drool kinda haha I dont have another way to explain it sorry... anyways and it is the dried up mineral residue from the dried tears mixed with all of the dust and dirt that your eyes cleans out while you sleep.

Poppy seeds. If you plant them they grow a field of poppies and make other people sleep, just like in the Wizard of Oz.
