I won't change my practice either way, as I have indulged in this healthy and 100% legal activity for over a decade..It's only illegal when a store owner asks you to leave and you don't, in which case you are trespassing, but in my experience, over 90% of places have no problems with bare feet ..I'm just curious about how you might perceive my quirk. I do not mean it as rude, and I certainly hope no one would see it that way.....

BTW, I refer any posters who refer to health codes or OSHA violations or the illegality of driving barefoot to

I don't really care either way. I just worry that they'll step on something and get hurt.

ETA- read the FAQ and that's addressed. Now I'll worry less. I wish I could do it but it's not my style. Plus I live in NYC and spend a lot of time on subways... You encounter much more disgusting things than urine on the ground.

Sad to see that some people still don't want to read up on this even though the link is provided in the question... kudo's to lauritachiquitabonita but thumbs down to Eightieschick70. Please, Eightieschick & others, don't get your health education from the sign on the door of your local McDonalds! There are NO health department rules against bare feet for customers, it's a persistant myth but as myths and urban legends tend to do, it gets spread around because many people don't bother to check up on stuff they hear... even when provided with a link like in this case. :-( :-(

i would think it depends on were you are going barefoot. most places society in general feels it is acceptable are at the beach, and in the summer at resorts, that type of thing. I wouldn't think it was rude, rudeness to me is that you are doing it to upset people and have a negative intent. Eccentricity, but a harmless one. I take off my shoes as soon as I get home, and wear sandals as much as i can all year, so i am with you for the most part. I am just afraid i would step on something and hurt myself, i am a hairstylist and can't injure my feet, or i would follow along!

In ordinary public situations I would not have any problem with a person being barefoot.
I understand that at some establishments and functions there may be a dress code requiring, among other things, shoes. (I'd guess that even in these situations, if you looked appropriate above the ankle, they might ignore the shoe thing.)
And in some situations shoes might be a necessary safety precaution.
If you were to go to court, it might be prudent to wear shoes.
But if you came to my wedding dressed nicely and barefoot, why would I object?

When given the choice I'll always choose barefoot. Here it's against the law to go barefoot in stores, but I never wear shoes to drive if I can help it!

my fiancee is a country boy and would go everywhere barefooted - that is, if I let him....
when we are in the country i don't care as much - but in metro areas I do....(also for the whole safety factor) - keeping up appearences I guess. Shallowness, on my part I must admit!

I wear Tivas because my wife goes nuts if I'm barefooted outside.

I think its rude because your putting business owners at risk for getting fined. It is against health codes espcially for plases that sell food. do you really know ho much bacteria your feet pick up walking on the ground? anyway If business dont comply with health codes then they could be fined or even shut down. If you ask me your pretty selfish to put someones business in that much jepardy just because you feel better without shoes.

It all depends on where you live, and the place you are in.
