2 things

1. long stride (saves your energy and you go faster)

2. (this depends on the distance) if it is a short distance run on your toes
longer distance, run on your heels and roll to your toe (saves energy for that last sprint to the finish)

hope i could help
:)

for sprinting you definitely need to alternate your workouts.

3-4miles is a great distance for building strength, but you should start speed work. here are a few good workouts, which should be done 2-3x a week:
J-runs (sprint either the curves or the straightaways, and slowly jog the one you don't run)
ladders (start at 50m, then 100, 150, 200, 300, 350, 400 and back down)
400-500ms (run a 400, take a few minutes-until you catch your breath but your heart's still fast-then run a 500. alternate for about 5 reps)
hill runs (sprint as fast as you can up it-as if you're working up from blocks in a race-then jog back down and repeat until you can't do any more)

use your arms without stressing your traps and try to run on grass to avoid injury and build strength. weight train at least once a week.

definitly DO NOT STRECH!!!

i'm a sprinter myself and it will wreck your body, especially if you stretch...and if you feel te need to, don't push your muscles, especially your hamstrings and quads...

people will tell you it will help, but it causes more injuries then it prevents.

this is my workout, it brought my 400m time down to a 59.0:

run 1/2 an hour everyday (3-4 miles) either on an eliptical or out on trails
every third day i add about 30 minutes of just running up hill sprints
also, i do ab work every day for about a half an hour.
i eat only lean meat and all organic food

it takes a couple of weeks until you get results...but don't give up!

good luck this season!

I am not sure what the other person is thinking but u do need to stretch!!!! I am a huge track star and if you dont stretch enough you can seriously pull a muscle! i couldnt run for a week because i pulled one of my ligaments!

and longer strides will seriously help! Get a partener who is faster than you so you can challenge your self to beat them!! run distance twice a week and then sprint twice a week both for 2 hours!! you will see a huge improvment and please tell me that you do have spikes!!!

You need to build your thigh muscles. Find a long stretch of gradual slope and sprint upwards for 100m. Walk down rest for a while. Repeat a few times a day during your training session.

techniques...hmm... have you ever heard of ladders? they're mainly for soccer players but they're really good. you lie them down on the floor and you do toe touches in them. it builds up speed and accuracy...it's great! and ease off a bit. 3-4 miles every MORNING is tough. what time you wake up?

hat to practice huh? well me too the best thing to do is play a sport that invovles running make sure its a sport you like. then if you get tired sit down and stretch.

other than practice and technique the only other thing obviously is experience, growth. You get better at something doing it over and over.
