Consider a light, complimentary color for your backsplash from your counter up to the cabinets. If your cabinets are white, consider changing out the knobs with some of your personality. If you do not have a soffet above your cabinets, consider getting an electrician to put in a light switch where you can plug in a string of white lights for a dramatic look. This can also serve as a "night light" of sorts. The ambient light softens and the reflection on the ceiling heightens the room...

I'd consider changing out the closet doors OR adding mirrors to the existing doors for convenience and also to extend the boundaries of the room....

Keep wallpaper, wall art small and minimal.

Regarding scale of your room spaces, consider a loveseat instead of a couch in your living room and add an interesting chair. You could also consider two padded chairs for the dining room table that could double as living room seating when entertaining....

I'm of the school that thinks painting all rooms that adjoin with the same color, even the ceiling. It's harder to differentiate the wall from the ceiling...

Hope this gives you some ideas.......

Use light colors; nothing dark. If you want dark colors; accent w/them. (pillows, rugs, knick-knacks). Mirrors make rooms appear larger. You can just use mirrors here and there. You don't have to cover the whole wall with mirrors. Keep watching HGTV; and read decorating magazines. I love Country Living; no it's not country decor; that's just the name. Good luck. I would help more, but don't really know what southeastern is....sorry

Without pictures, the advice anyone can give is extremely limited. Keep your furniture small-scaled and use color to warm up spaces and make them bold. Hire a student decorator.

Keep all the walls a light color, dark paint will def. make it seem even smaller.
