My hair is a light brown color with blonde highlights and I want to dye it black. What kind of dye should I use and is there a certain way I need to go about doing it without going to the salon?

I would go to the salon the first time, just to see that it is done right. After that, you can do it yourself.

Black hair dye has blue in it. What's going to happen is your blond highlights will turn green (yellow and blue makes green). You can prevent this by either using a black dye with a red base or color rinsing your hair brown first. At that point you can go ahead and cover it with the black dye (color rinsing has no chemical so it's totally safe). If you look at a color chart with primary and secondary colors on it, you will see what I mean.

DONT EVEN DO IT ON YOUR OWN, "drug store prodcts" significantly have a differant chemical composition, a salon may be pricey but call around, generally when you do a change so drastic a stylist will do it in stages, so perhaps she/he will recommend a level 5 first, then next vist a level 4 and then 3, that's going from a natural darker tone, she may use what is called shades by redken great line it's progressive, salon products have some lines that provide great shine, you cant do something so drastic and think its going to come out hot and sexy, you ever see some people with jet black hair that looks dull and lack lustre, it generally is some cheap walgreens color, thats my advice to you, go for classy rich dark tones but not some goth, sleazy black, GOOD LUCK

First i would recommend you going to a salon. the ph balance of over the counter colors is very harsh to your hair. Or go to a beauty supply place to get the color. Also you are going to need to have a color care shampoo and conditioner because you do have the highlights in there it will pry fade fast on those parts. so you are going to have to color it a few times b4 you get the result u are looking for. But the shampoo and conditioner will help moisturize your hair and keep the color longer. i would recommend Biolage Color care it is very moisturizing.

Think mighty hard about your color choice. Why, because black is not an easy color to change once it's done and if you hate it trust me you'll spend alot of money getting back to normal or alot of time growing it all out. I think your best to go with a temporary deep dark brown first if you hate it you can always change in a month.

I wouldn't attempt to color your hair if I was you. You may end up with "orange hair." Leave it to the pros. Personally, with your hair color & highlights, I would not be coloring my hair black. That's such a brash color if not done tastefully. There are things to consider when coloring the hair, such as skin shade for one. The over the counter hair colors never give you the hair color results you desire. One usually has to choose a hair color that is two shades lighter than what you want to end up with. It's tricky & I'd let a pro do the job.

Make sure you so a test strand, alot of black dyes affect different hair in a reverse way, you could end up with green or purple hair. I don't know what causes it, but I have seen it happen to several people.
