I live in NY state as well....you will have to pay the fine. If were just one month over you could just take in proof of inspection...but since it was 4 months, no way out. It doesn't do anything to your insurance. They don't need to know about tickets...they only need to know about accidents. Consider this an expensive lesson learned and make sure you don't let it expire again. Good luck to you!

No, your insurance will not go up. Only moving violations cause your rates to increase.
As for what you should do, that's obvious.
Get your car inspected and pay the ticket. There's nothing to fight - your inspection was out of date by 4 months. What possible defense could you present?
Pay the ticket and move on.

Get your car inspected tomorrow!!
Then go over to the Town Court, tomorrow, and show the ladies your proof that you had it done.
You will undoubtedly have to appear on the return date but it's unlikely that anything dire will happen to you. Seriously - just act stupid and apologetic - "I'm such an idiot, I can't believe I forgot all about it..." Make sure you visit with the Town Prosecutor first (on the Court date) - he will make a recommendation to the Judge. You will probably have to pay a fine, but as it's a non-moving violation - no points and no increase in your insurance. Offer to pay anything to make this go away.
You will probably get yelled at. Take it like a man. This is, of course, assuming you have no priors. AND it had better pass inspection tomorrow. If it doesn't, it could get a bit sticky. Don't go to Court until it's fixed or the Court date, whichever comes first.
DO NOT drive the car until it's passed inspection, and, in that case, only to the garage.
If I may respectfully correct Aunt Cookie - your Insurance Company will be notified of the disposition of a moving violation - not just accidents. Anything that puts "points" on your license.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

Only moving violations affect your insurance. Go get the vehicle inspected. How can you fight a no inspection sticker... you either had it or didn't.

In Texas, you would just go get your inspection sticker for your car. On the date of your appearance in court, submit proof and pay the small fine. Here it is $10. It didn't affect my insurance whatsoever.
