A 5 finger pattern is the first five notes of a scale. It is usually the first thing learned by beginning piano students. The C Major 5-finger pattern would be C-D-E-F-G played in your right hand with your thumb-first finger...etc. all the way up to your pinky and back down to your thumb.

Don't know music well, but could the 5-finger pattern have anything to do with the width of an octave on the piano--stretch one's hand out wide and it should cover an octave, I think.
