I know they must reach the hospital within 3 hours of a stroke...but what do you give them right away?

You don't give them anything, except an ambulance ride. Any head pain, dizziness with neuro deficts (weakness on one side, facial drooping, paralysis, unequal pupils etc) should be treated as a medical emergency. Monitor their airway and assist as needed until help arrives. The quicker they get to the ER, the quicker stroke drugs can be administered. You should also know where your local stroke center is. Most areas have a hospital that specialize in strokes. Go to the wrong place and you may be SOL. You'll get treated, but may not have the best possible outcome. There is really nothing you can do in the home. A blood vessel has become compromised in the brain, tissue is dying and there is little to do at home for that.

Stroke Symptoms:
Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body.

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech.

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination.

Sudden severe headaches with no known cause.

If you have any of these symptoms, call 911.

look at their face, if one side is drooping
have them hold both arms out one of them may droop
numbness in face and down one side of the body
