I grew up there and my mother still lives there. It is one of the nicest towns in Nassau County and very convenient to NYC. (It is also quite expensive)

Port Washington is a good place. Its a waterfrontier town. You should live near the shore heading towards the West(NYC) so you can have the view of the Bronx and the Throgs Neck Bridge. You have to Major highways near it. Theres not really alot of traffic, only during rush hour. The Nearest highway(s) are the Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway. There many shops in PT. Washington. Port Washington isn't a neighborhood. We have 4 neighborhoods. Ocean Breeze(North west) Main Street(Center East) Little Pt.WAshington(east) And Big Rich hills cause there many rich people there.

Port Washington is more than just a Main Street and not all of the town is on the waterfront. It is a nice town, though. Plenty of shopping and easy access to NYC. Some heavy traffic, though.

Safe and Nice is relative to your reality. What I would live with or without would be quite different than yours.
Go see for yourself before you move is the only answer.
