Can I convert MP3 to Wav format?Does it reduce the file size?

Dear all,
Thank you very much for the detailed answers. But I am confused.I download lots of music from 'limewire' and they are mostly in MP3 format and roughly it is 1MB per minute.
Then I come across other sites which offer music which are in wave format. But it takes only around 500kb for 4 minute and downloads very fast.Let me give you one example.Let me take the song by Carly Simon "all i want is you".It is in WAV format and 460kb and 3.55 minutes.
Now let me go to limewire.I downloaded the same song.It is MP3 3648 kb and about 4 minutes.
I do not understand it.Can you please enlighten me on this please?

Yes, you can convert from practically any format to any other format with the right software.

.wav is the purest of sound formats, but the oldest.
a 5 minute song takes about 55Mb in diskspace.

.mp3 is a compressed form of .wav and it is 10 times better.
a 5 min song takes about 5.5Mb in diskspace, so mp3 is def what u want.

I use the alivemedia.net program to convert. But I also have this wav editing program (goldwave.com) that records sounds in .wav format, but I can hit File, Save As, and choose many formats to save it as including .mp3.

I like the alivemedia.net program because it is 5 times fast than LAME (freeware).

To get a free wav to mp3 (or vice versa) converter, go to http://lame.sourceforge.net/

Yes you can - and no it will not.
MP3 is compressed, WAV is not.

If you have a CD and wish to rip it - you can rip to WAV but then you`d have 1 on 1 copies - and no loss whatsoever.

it increases the size and its pointless if ur looking for quality ... however thats cd format basically ... so if u drop ur mp3s in ur cdrom drive and burn them windows will ask if u want a music cd and convert them for you ..
