the last meal of the day should primarily consist of any easily digestible protein source source like eggs, fish or a casein based protein like cottage cheese. you also want some healthy fats.

you don't want to eat carbs late at night when activity levels are low.they are most likely to be converted to lipids and stored as fats if your liver glycogen stores are full. plus eating too many carbs at night can cause elevated serum insulin levels which will effect GH release during sleep. 60% of GH is released during sleep, it is the most powerful fat burning hormone that the human body produces.

if you are craving sugars then some low GI fruits would be acceptable.

I usually have a protein shake with some fats about 30-45 minutes before I hit the sack.

It doesn't matter when you eat really. It only matters if you use the energy from the food before you eat some more.
I remember reading some time ago that NASA did a lot of experimenting with food and digestion for their astronaut program. It showed that the digestive process continues whilst asleep, upside down, etc.It makes little difference. This is why most people need the toilet first thing in the morning to rid themselves of the nights "processed" food.
What is important is what the body does with the food energy after or when its digested.
This is where the idea that the time of eating has any affect comes into play.
If you do nothing after you have eaten, i.e. sleep, and you have eaten something for example with high carbs or sugers which is easily digested, the body has to do something with all this energy and is likely to choose to store it - in your fat cells.
If you continue to do no exercise the following day, and do not use this energy before you ingest more food, then you will get fat.
If you eat at 11pm and go to work at 2 am and use the energy, the body won't be storing it and you won't get fat. There isn't really better or worse foods in this regard, although proteins and fibre take the longest to digest, thus giving you more time to potentially "burn it off".
Exercise more, eat less.Eat regulary and before activity rather than after it so you "instruct" your body into using the food energy you have just acquired, rather than storing it.
energy in = energy out.burn more calories than you eat and you will lose weight. It doesn't matter if its day or night. The hard part is doing the exercise!

lv-consultant gave you a very comprehensive response there. Not much I could add to that.

Have a look at my reply regarding your question when to train. If you do train in the evening, say between 6-7, then your metabolism will still be quite high, so you get away with eating a bit later then.

Also remember, sometimes when you THINK you're peckish you are in fact dehydrated. So next time you feel hungry at 8pm, have a large glass of water and wait 10 minutes and see if you're still hungry.

the reason you're hungry so late is because you aren't eating properly during the day.

if you're hungry in the evening try eating a piece of fruit or some air popped popcorn.

Lettuce and cottage cheese is supposed to be a good bedtime snack. it's supposed to help you get off to sleep quite well, plus it's healthy! Try it with some sesame Ryvita.

All of you people are stupid. There is nothing wrong with eating after
8:30. It's good if you're growing. If you're worried about calories than go work out or something

A vegetarian diet is great for losing weight.
More food less calories.
Drinking water can fool your system into thinking you ate.
