I would suggest books by Andrew Beyer, Joe Cardello, Steve Davidowitz along with the DRF press publications. I would stay away from any books that promise you 'easy money' formulas. You can check them out on Amazon.com.

Here are three good books.

Sam Lewin--The Education of a Horseplayer. You want a classic? This is a classic. It's an old book, but most of what he has to say is still valid. When I read it for the first time, it opened up a lot of doors for me in handicapping. Also, pretty fun to read with good stories.

Richard Eng--Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies. This book is better than I had hoped it would be. He does a really good job breaking things down into basics, especially about different wagers and strategies.

Andrew Beyer--Picking Winners. This one is the most scientific of the three, and some of the statistical minutae he goes into gets a little brain numbing, but if you are serious about betting on the races it's good to find out a little bit more about how the Beyer speed figures are determined.

Good luck!

I don't know of books but I myself am a rider and I know a few things you could try. Look at the horses past record AND age the record may be good (all wins or something) but if the horse is old it may not be as fast anymore. If you can get a look at the horses, they may not allow you but try and if you see them comming out of a trailer make some quick observations. They should have a shiny coat, they should not be trotting on the spot or stamping hoves (shows edgyness and the horse is bound for error) look for sleen legs but in porportion to the horse, a small jockey and if you get close enough to the horses face, it should have some drool (this is a good thing in horses) and the eyes should be focused not darty.
Hope it helps

Sorry I don't recommend learning from a book... what makes the Author an authority? After years of working with horses the only real way is to go to the track and study the Daily Racing Form. Even the odds maker sets the odds by what he /she thinks the PUBLIC will be betting, so their recommendations may not be true.
