To correct the above answers, the great wall was used to be an obstacle for outside invaders who may invade China. It was also a security warning relay. When one guard tower saw invaders coming, they lit up fire and smoke, and the next guard tower follows, until it gets to the central command whom would send reinforcement troops to stop the invader. It certainly worked back in the days.
