Cats have minds of their own and I don't know if you'll ever stop them from going on the couch, but you could try this. Get a toy water gun and everytime you catch them on the couch squirt them with the water gun. Cats hate that and I don't mean that you should soak them or use a hard spray. Just a gentle spritz of water will do. I've stopped cats from scratching furniture that way. It might work to break them from going on the sofa. You may hurt their feelings doing this, but you won't physically hurt them. Good Luck!

Sticky tape works well and if you are home use the water bottle technique. There are other options for mats you can put on the couch that will scare the cats off the couch without hurting them. Here is a link below.

Have you ever tried a product called Calm-ez? (I'm pretty sure that's what it is called) I know for sure Petsmart's sell it. It's a pheromone based product that excretes calming pheromones to make the enviorment less stressful. Also, putting her on a low protein diet, such as Hills Prescription W/D would help with the weight issues. However, you'd need to see a vet about this so they can discuss the possibilities and write you a prescription for the food. Its the only thing I can think of that might help you. I'm a strong believe in rehabilitation. I think that given your current dedication that time would be able heal at least some of her behavioral issues, maybe not all of them, but that is to be expected given her prior abuse. Unfortunately you've been given an almost impossible situation, but it's awesome that you've stepped up and taken this cat in and taken impeccable care of it like you have. Good luck. Hopefully that product will work for her, and make things easier.

Use a water bottle or squirt gun filled with water. Whenever the cat goes up there, squirt the cat with water and say "No!" or "Get Down!" Cats really dislike getting wet, and since water doesn't physically hurt the cat, he will soon break his little habit....Not to mention that a few sqirts of water on your couch won't cause any damage either.

There are furniture sprays available that smell bad to cats, but humans don't notice. Ask at your local pet store. The point is that the cat will stay away from the bad smell (and off your furniture) even when you're not around, without leaving aluminum foil around (which my cat would end up playing with).

Water spray bottle and a whistle you use whenever they jump up. My mother swears by mouse traps (they set them off, but I know of none that have ever had their paws caught), then again, her male cat pushes them aside or swats them off so he can still lay down. If ultimately you still cannot keep them off, I would suggest pillow cases or finished fabric squares (matching the couch) where they lie to prevent long-term oil discoloration from their fur. you may also wan to try putting various types of cat-beds on the couch until the choose one and slowly move it to the foot of the couch on the floor.

If you mean your cat will dig its claws into your couch if you try to pull it off, then get an old pillow for it or a cat bed or something and make your cat used to sleeping on that. To get your cat off your couch, pick it up with one hand and unhook its claws with the other.

you can get a spray from the pet store that may help, but other than that just use a squirt bottle with water.
